Welcome to the home of the Sudbury Professional Firefighters Association, in Sudbury, Ontario. The SPFFA is Local #527 of the International Association of Fire Fighters. Sudbury Firefighters have been protecting the lives and property since 1883.

The SPFFA represents 126 members in Fire Suppression, Fire Prevention, Training, and Support. Local #527 is dedicated to securing all that our members require to ensure the citizens of Sudbury receive the highest level of protection possible. The needs of its members are paramount to the SPFFA. We work hard to secure adequate pay, health benefits, and a safe working environment.

The Sudbury Fire Department operates 5 stations, with a minimum total staffing of 22 firefighters. The equipment includes 4 pumpers with 4 firefighters, 1 rescue with 2, 1 aerial with 2, and a quint with 2. We also operate tankers and bush trucks, depending on the call. We work a schedule of 4 days, 4 off, 4 nights, 4 off. The days are 10 hours, and the nights, 14.

The IAFF has more than 2,700 affiliates, representing fire fighters in more than 3,500 communities in the U.S. and Canada. The 263,000 members of the IAFF are full-time professional fire fighters who protect the lives and property of 80 percent of the nation’s population. One of the oldest public employee unions in America, the IAFF was formed in 1918, at a time when many fire fighters were required to live in firehouses and be on duty 24 hours a day every day with only the occasional day off.

Over the last 79 years, the IAFF has been a leading force for numerous advances for the fire and emergency services, including:

  • establishing progressive civil service laws in Canada and the U.S.
  • enhancement of public safety through national standards
  • ensuring professionalism and high standards of training and education for fire and emergency personnel
  • establishing training programs for hazardous materials emergencies
Fire fighting is still one of the most dangerous occupations in North America. The IAFF is extremely active in promoting occupational health and safety and supporting standards for safe apparatus, equipment and practices.

The IAFF supports numerous charitable activities. It is the largest national sponsor of the Muscular Dystrophy Association, underwrites scholarships for the children of members killed in the line of duty, and supports research into the treatment of and rehabilitation from burn injuries through the IAFF Burn Foundation.
